The Real Desktop, the Real Cost
Now it is possible to have your Windows desktop as messy or untidy as you like. Using what is known as a Real Desktop you can place 3D representations of the icons on your Windows desktop. This concept is pretty amusing and has a great look and feel. It could have you rearranging these lifelike objects for hours on end. While this 3-D space will help you to organise your desktop in such a way that it could improve the way you work while on your computer. It seems to really only allow us to make a complete and utter mess of the place.
While it looks quite cool, I am not sure if it is particularly useful. Yes it may be fun, but how many times can you really move your icons around. A left mouse click to move an icon, use both mouse buttons to pick up or click on the edge to rotate it. The best part of this is watching the interaction of icons when you make them collide with each other. Once you've made a mess of your desktop there does not seem away to restore it back to a tidy state. When you right click on the desktop it gives you the standard options that were previously available within Windows. The other thing that concerns me with a Real Desktop is that the 3-D effect can only be achieved with some cost to your system's memory. I am sure we could make better use of this memory with some of system function. To combat this memory problem there is at least one free Lite version without the bells and whistles. The standard one comes with a variety of colours, themes and other options.
Take a look at this application and see what you think by all means. To reduce your computers resources for what it is offering just does not seem like a good trade off.

You can use Microsoft Virtual Desktop Manager (it's free). Go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
And click on Virtual Desktop Manager on the right side of the page.
