Is moving out at age 17 legal?

I will be 17 years old, and my friend will be 16 (almost 17). We both moved to chicago our junior year of high school, and hate it more than anything. We want to go back to West Des Moines, IA and live in an apartment or something for the 2nd semester of junior year and senior year. Our parents would pay and switch off coming down on weekends. Is this legal? Any sources? Is there any way to make this legal, especially without switching guardians? Help, please!?
