Dull day trips are ancient history

Nottingham Castle is a focal point of the city, perched high on a rock from which you can inspect the metropolis below. It’s hardly surprising the spot was chosen by royalty over the centuries to survey their subjects and marvel at the sweeping estates.

The history of the Castle complex has had three distinct eras – the original Norman Castle, the Ducal Mansion still present and today’s Nottingham Castle museum.

Originally constructed in 1067, the Castle was first built from wood for William the Conqueror before being replaced by an impenetrable stone fortress during the reign of King Henry II. Nottingham Castle’s strategic position near the crossing of the River Trent made it popular with nobility, as did its proximity to the regal hunting grounds of the Royal Forest of the Peak, Barnsdale and Sherwood Forest.

The Castle’s Robin Hood connection dates back to the Third Crusade, when the Sheriff of Nottingham occupied the derelict residence while Richard the Lionheart went to war. Over the years the Castle witnessed many of their run-ins and a statue of Robin Hood lurking in the shadows of the Castle wall commemorates their relationship to this day.

The Castle was the focal point of many historic battles over the centuries – who could be surprised for a stake in this prime piece of real estate?! 1330 saw teenage King Edward III take siege on the property via ‘Mortimer’s Hole’, part of its network of caves, to arrest his mother and her lover Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March.

The Castle fell into disrepair in the 16th century as the focus of many political conflicts and was burned to the ground in 1649. But the site wasn’t dormant for long. Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle started building a ‘Ducal Mansion’ on the Castle foundations 25 years later. Although there wasn’t much left of Nottingham Castle above ground, the Mansion inherited its extensive rock-cut cellars and cave passages.

The Mansion was too burned down in 1831 but restored 34 years later as Nottingham Castle Museum to house the city’s fine and decorative art collections and exhibitions on its history and archaeology.

For a new perspective on Castle life, see it through the eyes of its subjects at the Museum of Nottingham Life, Brewhouse Yard. Five 17th-century cottages at the base of Castle Rock showcase city life over the last 300 years. Nose around a beautifully-preserved Victorian home and schoolroom, peek into a 1920s toy shop and take cover in a World War II air raid shelter.

While immersed in ancient history, your visit wouldn’t be complete without sampling two of England’s oldest pubs. Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem dates back to 1189AD and was carved from the living rock upon which Nottingham Castle stood. Or sup in 13th century Ye Olde Salutation Inn, a homely medieval inn and first stop on the city’s ghost walks.

The Castle site today oversees a rich mix of modern businesses and restored relics. Whether you are visiting for the day or extending the entertainment into the night, take inspiration from its Royal residents and plan your route of attack from the best perspective in town.

Ok, I was playing WarCraft III on the administrator profile on my vista laptop when all of a sudden, my computer froze and I did ctrl+alt+del. That made things worse so I pressed and held the shut down button. I turned my computer on and went to logon to my Administrator profile again and it said:
