How painful is it to swap a 5.0L Ford into a 3.8L Thunderbird?
I just posted another question about a cracked head in a 3.8L thunderbird. I bought the car with the cracked head really cheap for parts for my 5.0L thunderbird but the car I bought is in 100 times better shape. I have a lot of work done to the 5.0L in my car but the rearend is going out and that's why I bought this one with the 3.8L. My question is what do you all have to swap to swap the motors in the cars? I've had the 5.0 out of my current car a few times so I know my way around them pretty good. Is it just a matter of the wiring harness and computer etc to make it run right? I assume the tranny and exhaust would have to be swapped also? Everything on my current motor is new, new rebuild, perf heads/intake, new radiator, motor mounts, you name it so it would be worth putting into this rust free perfect bodied chassis I think. Any suggestions?? Thanks!!
I'm afraid it would be very painful -- BUT, since you have a 'Bird that you can use for parts it won't be impossible. I highly recommend using ALL the electronics and wiring from the V8 'Bird plus the front springs, entire fuel system, radiator and possibly the rear axle assy. It sounds like an ordeal but really, once the engine and interior are removed It's not that bad. This will also give you the chance to oil, grease, adjust, clean and upgrade EVERYTHING in the car, right down to steaming the carpets and seats. When you are completely done it will drive, smell and look brand new -- at least on the inside.
