Why is my local network speed decreasing?
I have several computers on a network.
- A DSL modem is connected to a router (Linksys BEFSR41).
- A switch is connected to the router (NetGear ProSafe 24-port 10/100 Switch JFS524)
- The computers are connected to the switch through a CAT5 (Leviton Cat5e GigaMax 5e)
- A network drive is connected to the switch (Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive)
- The computers I'm testing on have Vista.
When I try to copy a file from the network drive to a computer, the speed starts at about 4MB/s and then gradually decreases down to just a few KB/s.
How? Why?
Also, I don't know if it's related, but for many many files I get this:
Error 0x80070021: The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file
I think it might be because I keep canceling when it becomes too slow.
Ignore MastaShortie, his answer is wrong.
Network drives are notorious for having these types of problems, and for being extremely slow in general. What I would recommend is copying a test file (100 or 200 MB or so) directly from one computer to another. This will eliminate the network drive from the equation. If this file copies quickly, then the network drive is the problem. If this file copies slowly, then perhaps your switch has problems. You could try connecting the computer to different ports on the switch to see if that makes a difference.
