Is an external firewire port better then installing a firewire port?

I need a firewire port for my dell desktop comp. just wondering if an external firewire port is better and how are they hooked up to a computer? I'm kind of worried about installing a firewire port on my comp.

If you are worried about internal install then just get an external.
You really will not be able to notice the speed difference between the two. Plus if you get an external you can use it on more then one computer if you need.
