i dont want to clean install as it would delete all my data

If you have XP you should be able to use the upgrade facility found on the disk all you need to do is insert the install disk whilst running XP and then the chose install and you will be given an option to upgrade this will keep all your files and the programs that are compatible but if not a dual boot system will be fine. It's found in the advanced setup and this is found only when you boot from the Vista DVD The Vista install disk will move your existing data and partition the hard drive and install to the newly created partition.
