GR8 by RIZWAN RAZZAQ on 01/31/2009: ITS GR8 PROUCT I THINK I CAN SELL IT IN UK AND MAKE GOOD MONEY The Best Distributor Of Chinese Wholesale Electronics. is fiber optic from verizon faster than cable Internet service because I'm considering switching? Um, I would say it CAN be... but it depends. I'm a little unsure about these figures of 50Mbps and so forth... I think that may be at highest... with a much more expensive package. Right off the Verizon FiOS webpage, it says that at a starting price of $42.99 you get 5Mbps download and 2Mbps upload. However, with an extra $10 you get 15Mbps upload (still 2Mbps upload) and at $64 you get 15Mbps upload and download. For -$139.95- you get 30Mbps download. I don't see a 50Mpbs plan for consumers on the page I'm looking at.. here's a link.... http://www22.verizon.com/content/consumerfios/packages+and+prices/packages+and+prices.htm I'm currently on Time Warner Cables standard Road Runner service and I often can get a little over 6Mpbs download, I suppose between 4-6 average.. The upload however IS only around 500kbps average . Arguably this is where FiOS really smokes cable... higher upload speeds. Now according to my local Time Warner info... prices for RoadRunner go $30 for "basic" service.. which is 1.5Mbps download and 256kbps upload. "Standard' which I suppose I have is $44.95 and is supposed to be 10Mbps download and 512kbps upload. Here's a link... http://www.timewarnercable.com/nynj/Products/Cable/packagesandpricing.html So if you were to trust the ISPs list speeds, for $42.99 your supposed to get 5Mbps download from FiOS whereas for $2 more on RoadRunner your supposed to get 10Mbps. Though like I said, most of the speed tests I've run get me about 6Mpbs actually... alot of factors can effect your internet speeds and speed tests though. I could concievably be on some sort of older plan or something too, because I thought I paid a little less the $44.99. But to answer the question... Verizon FiOS doesn't seem to ALWAYS get you better download speeds... it depends on the plan. It DOES provide you with the fastest option.. but at a cost, mind you. It seems to pretty much always get you better upload speeds however. Obviously a comparison also depends on exactly which high speed cable service your currently using, as well. I've heard alot of good things about FiOS.. don't want to seem as though I'm knockin it.... it just seems the degree to which it's faster then cable is a little exaggerated at times, at least from what info I've found. I just got FiOS in my area and I'm waiting to see how things pan out. With competition may come upgrades and/or price cuts from Time Warner. Currently many cable services actually use fiber optic to a point.. just not straight into your home. They still utilize coaxial cable wires into the home...particularly since people still want to hookup there old TVs to basic cable. Basically Verizon has it easier because they have far fewer customers (mind you Time Warner provides basic and DigitalTV service to my whole area) and are only just putting up their lines. They have an advantage there so to speak... it's harder for Time Warner and other cable companies to make network wide upgrades to catch up. Price cuts are very possible though.
