Can you help me with a small 3DS max 9 problem?

Sometimes while I am editing a poly, all of the vertexes within a certain area (how this area is decided I am not sure) become rainbow colored (vertexes near the selection are red, further away are orange, yellow, etc). If I try to move one vertex, all of the colored ones around it move. I believe I accidentally switched some setting causing this to happen? Does anyone know how to remove it? Thank You!
