When they are unlike you have to find a common denominator which will be the LCD.
Example:
5/7 - 1/14, you look and see first if you can take the smaller number and turn it into the larger one, yes, I can make a 7 into a 14 by multiplying everything by 2 so it becomes 10/14 - 1/14 = 9/14
3/4 - 1/3, look, there is no way you can make a 3 into a 4, so start with the multiples of 4, 4, 8, 12, now the multiples of 3, 3, 6, 9,12, Bingo! 12 is it for both of them so multiply 3/4 by 3/3 and 1/3 by 4/4 and you have 9/12 - 3/12 = 6/12=1/2
