Is it possible to revert from Ubuntu 9.04 to an earlier release without losing all my data etc?

Basically, like the masses of other intel-graphics equipped ubuntu users, I have been royally screwed over by this release because it literally just doesn't work properly with intel graphics. I'm not going to have a rant about it, because loads of people already have and it won't change anything anyways. So does anyone know if I can revert to intrepid ibex or something without having to back everything up and restore it?

There is a known issue with Intel Graphics on Ubuntu 9.04 however there is a fix for it as outlined below. A rollback to an earlier Ubuntu release I have not tried and I am not sure it is even possible
