Where can i get a free program that converts DVDs into a single smaller file?

I am looking for a free program (not a trial program) that will convert a DVD into somthing arround 1GB instead of 4GB or 8GB. I would like to keep a decent amount of quality. I dont want all the extra features on the DVD just the movie itself in one easy to use file. Also what is the best file format to convert to, to keep as much quality as possible for this file size? I am able to download movies that have great quality and are arround 1GB - 1.5GB but i cant find a program that will convert the DVD's i already have. I am putting my collection onto my external HHD so they are easier to carry arround with my laptop. If you dont know of any free ones what is the best program to buy (please let me know roughly how much also).
"Ole R" I have DVD Shrink 3.2 and although it is a great program can it convert the file format instead of turning it into an image?

There is One program you are looking for ! IT's called ratDVD ! It keeps the DVD quality but it is makeing it arround 1 GB ! This software is improbable !It is 100 % Free and work great ! The Outgoing format of the DVD is *.ratDVD but any DVD player and any PC can rad it ! Thes is the best program I have ever seen !
