I know I am limited by my connection speed, but I have been experiencing slow internet because a roomate of mine has been downloading a lot. Will upgrading my router improve my ability to surf the web while he is downloading?

Your surfing speed is bottlenecked by your cable modem or DSL connection. Any router affects only local ethernet traffic. ie if you download from your roommates computer. The local file transfer will very fast. But you both must have GigE NICs and the GigE router. Thats 1 Billion bits/sec or 100 Million Bytes each second.

Most Cable/DSL modems are less than 10Mbits/Sec. To the outside world, a few are faster. It is all throttled by your communications provider. Pay more money, and you may get faster service, maybe not. Have to ask your provider.
