Recent IBM big moves start with the mainland, foundry technology platform cooperation, not only to join hands with SMIC's advanced 45-nanometer manufacturing process, but also with the Wuxi CSMC an alliance against the mainstream 0.18-micron RF CMOS process technology and process orders for co-operation. China noted that the semiconductor industry, IBM actively use mainland-fab productivity, the full expansion of the mainland market is expected to influence the future of IBM technology, deep plowing in the mainland, and to compete with TSMC forces.

A small transformer used in a foundry has 550 primary turns and 20 secondary turns. Initially, the switch on the secondary side of the transformer is open, so there is no connection between the two ends of secondary coil.

(a) What is the voltage difference between the two ends of the secondary coil, Vs, if a direct current potential of Vp = 120 V is placed across the primary coil? (That is, the frequency of oscillation on the primary is zero.)

(b) What is the voltage difference between the two ends of the secondary coil, Vs if Vp is 120 V and the frequency of oscillation on the primary is 60Hz?

(c) Now equipment powered by the transformer is put into use and the switch is closed. A resistance of 14 Ω is placed between the two ends of the secondary coils. What is the current through the secondary coil?

(d) What is the current through the primary side of the coil with the switch closed?

A small transformer used in a foundry has 550 primary turns and 20 secondary turns. Initially, the switch on the secondary side of the transformer is open, so there is no connection between the two ends of secondary coil.

As the voltage of the ALTERNATING CURRENT increases in the primary coil, an INCREASING magnetic field is produced. As the INCREASING magnetic field moves perpendicular to the loops of wire in the secondary coil, an INCREASING AC voltage is induced in the secondary coil. This INCREASING voltage in the secondary coil induces an INCREASING AC current in the loops of the secondary coil.

The oscillating current in the loops of the primary coil produces an oscillating magnetic field, which induces an oscillating current in the loops of the secondary coil!!

If the current in the loops of the primary coil is not oscillating, no oscillating current will be induced in the loops of the secondary coil!!

AC electricity in the loops of the primary coil produces an alternating magnetic field, which induces AC electricity in the loops of the secondary coil.

DC electricity in the loops of the primary coil produces a constant magnetic field, which produces no voltage or current in the secondary coil.
DIRECT CURENT DOES NOT PRODUCE VOLTAGE

Ratio of primary turns to secondary turns = 540/20 = 27.5
So, the primary voltage is 37.5 times the secondary voltage, and the secondary current is 27.5 times the primary current.

(Primary voltage) ÷ (Primary turns ) = (Secondary voltage) ÷ (Secondary turns)

The induced current is inversely proportional to the induced voltage.
(Primary voltage) * (Primary current ) = (Secondary voltage) * (Secondary current)

(a) What is the voltage difference between the two ends of the secondary coil, Vs, if a DIRECT CURRENT potential of Vp = 120 V is placed across the primary coil? (That is, the frequency of oscillation on the primary is zero.)
DIRECT CURENT DOES NOT PRODUCE VOLTAGE

(Primary voltage) ÷ (Primary turns ) = (Secondary voltage) ÷ (Secondary turns)
120 ÷ 550 = (Secondary voltage) ÷ 20
Secondary voltage = 4.3636 volts

(c) Now equipment powered by the transformer is put into use and the switch is closed. A resistance of 14 Ω is placed between the two ends of the secondary coils. What is the current through the secondary coil?

Voltage = Current * Resistance
V = I * R
4.3636 = I * 14
I = 0.3117 amps

(d) What is the current through the primary side of the coil with the switch closed?

(Primary voltage) * (Primary current ) = (Secondary voltage) * (Secondary current)
120 * (Primary current ) = 4.3636 * 0.3117

Primary current = 0.01133 amps

One last thing to notice
Power = Voltage * Current
P = V * I

Primary Power = 120 * 0.1133 = 1.3596 watts
Secondary Power = 4.3636 * 0.3117= 1.3601 watts

1.3596 watts ≈ 1.3601 watts (rounding has caused some error)

Primary Power = Secondary Power
