IEEE Adapter/Firewire Cable Not Working?

I recently bought a Canon HV20 DV camcorder and realized to transfer video to my computer I needed a firewire cable. My computer did not have a firewire port so i went to Best Buy and bought a Dynex IEEE 1394 PCI Host Adapter and inserted it into one of the empty PCI slots on my Windows XP computer. I connected the firewire cable from my camera to the IEEE slot and nothing happened. I went to "MY COMPUTER" and looked at the drives and I didn't see the IEEE adapter on there. The adapter is securely in the PCI slot. This is extremely frustrating, what am I doing wrong? Please help me.

Have you installed the drivers for the adapter card? If WinXP did not recognize it, it can't install drivers.
