How do I install a second hard drive that is EIDE when the first hard drive is SATA?

OS is Windows Vista. I installed the 2nd drive (EIDE) with its jumper set to slave but it didn't work. I didn't change any jumper settings on the first drive (SATA). They are each on a separate cable on the motherboard. When booted up it stops at the Bios telling me it is a non-system disk.
The second hard drive is just for backup storage. It DOES have BOTH the data cable and the power cable attached.
OK I got the PC to recognize the second harddrive (set the first drive (SATA) to Master. But, it boots with the second drive which has no OS on it. If I go into the Boot Menu and select that to boot with, then it's OK. But, when I reboot it tries to use the second drive again. How can I tell it to always use the first drive (SATA) to boot with?

sata drive is connected to a sata port with a sata cable...different shape and size from the IDE cable used to connect the EIDE drive to your IDE connector on the motherboard. The EIDE drive is set to master or cable-select. Check the BIOS to make sure that both drives are recognized, and that your boot drive is the SATA drive, NOT the EIDE..I think you get the non-system disk message because the EIDE drive is set as the boot drive in the BIOS.
