I want to reformat the hard drive on my desktop but don't have the disks?

I bought a refurbished desktop from Gateway, they did not include the driver and reformat disks when they shipped. Since the 90 day warranty has expired they will not ship me new disks and have been everything but helpful. I have windows XP service pack 2 and wanted to know how I could acquire the disks necessary to do this. Can I use the reformat disks I got when I bought my HP laptop?

You have a few options, this is assuming you have a LICENSE to use the software. (A sticker on your computer with a product ID)

1) Gateway is required to provide media to you, even if you aren't the original owner. They don't have to provide tech support / warrenty support though. But they DO have to provide you with media. They can charge you for it (Like $5-20 + S/H) but can't charge you for a new license. I would look at their website, most OEMs have automated ways thru their website to order disks.

2) Yes. You can use the reformat disks from your HP Laptop, if it's the same version of Windows. Use your product ID sticker/license on your gateway desktop when installing it. However, after that, you will need to go to Gateways website and download drivers specific to your model gateway.
-- Some reformat disks are machine specific, but not many. You can also use a friends disk if their version matches the version that it says on your sticker, like "Windows XP Home" and it came with their PC.

3) Gateway is really required to provide that media, even if you aren't the original owner, as the maker of the software (Microsoft) only replaces media that were bought at retail. They do this for free for retail. If all else fails, worth checking into as long as you have that product ID....
