Data Transfer?

I have a desktop computer and a laptop . Can I transfer my important info to the desktop from my laptop via usb cable so I can reformate my hard drive.

You could transfer via USB or Ethernet cross-over cable. Not sure if they even have USB cables with both ends the same (both Female/Male) which is what you'd need to do it via USB. Cross-over Ethernet would be an easier way, or if you have a home network setup, you could simply share out a folder from the laptop and be sure to check that users can change files, the all you'd have to do is open up "My Network Places" or search for computers to find the Laptop and then copy the files over into that folder.
