Six-Core Desktop Processor

Advanced Micro Devices is preparing a desktop processor with six processing engines, sources familiar with the plans of the company revealed. The new central processing units (CPU) will not be available this year but is likely to improve the performance of AMD desktop platforms sometime in 2010. AMD has kept a tight lid on its new hexa-core processor, so opening next week should be interesting. To recap what we have heard on the chip: going to earth in three iterations of the brand Phenom II X6 1035T, 1055T and 1075T, all of which are based on 45 nm and is compatible with AM2 + and AM3 sockets, so should work with existing motherboards - However, a BIOS update may be needed.

AMD processor code named Thuban is the desktop processor the company's first six processing engines. The chips will be compatible with socket AM3 infrastructure and integrated dual-channel PC3-10600 (DDR3 1333MHz) memory controller. It is very likely that AMD Phenom processors maintain Thuban mark II and chip design code-named Istanbul for servers, therefore, will have 3 MB of L2 cache (512KB per core) and 6 MB cache L3. The chips are made using the manufacturing process of 45 nm SOI.

Thuban is a star in the constellation Draco, and also means "dragon" in Arabic. The six new core chip should be compatible with existing infrastructure of AM3 (and, quite possibly, even with AM2 + infrastructure split power plane) Thuban be seen if it becomes part of the current high platform AMD desktop called Dragon, or power of the next generation of the company of Leo platform.

Leo AMD platform will be based on the AMD 890FX and 890GX core logic sets.
