Are you talking internal or external hard drives? Is it a laptop or a desktop computer?

Let’s take the easy answer first. If the hard drive is used to store data, backups, music or photos the easy solution is to use an external USB2 drive. You can also buy external drive case that will hold a normal internal hard drive. This would work equally well on laptop or desktop. It is not a good solution if you plan to run the operating system or large games from it. If the machine is a laptop this is probably the only solution.

Desktop hard drives are usually found in one of to types, that being SATA and ATA. Many newer motherboards have connections for both types although it’s not unusual to find SATA only. Older computer are ATA you can identify by the ribbon cable that connects hard drive to the motherboard this ribbon is 20 pins wide in two layers giving you a 40 pin cable. The SATA connector is only 7 pins wide in a single layer

ATA: You can connect up to two devices to this ribbon cable. When connecting more than one device they must be identified as either master or slave. This is done with jumpers on the back of the device. The drive you boot on should be the master so jumper must be set on second drive to make it the slave. Once this is configured plug in the ATA cable and a 4 pin power connector and your on your way. If your motherboard has two ATA connectors and one is unused set the drive to master or cable select (default) and plug into the free ATA connector on the motherboard.

SATA: You can only have one SATA device on a cable. There are no jumpers or settings to adjust. Just plug the SATA cable into the motherboard and the other end to the drive, You can’t get it backward the plugs only go one way. Add the SATA power connector (also one way) and your ready to go.
