Theres not an alarm that prevents you from changing the battery, it is your normal alarm.

When you disconnect the battery the car looses all power, so when you reconnect it the alarm automatically rearms itself and goes off until you deactivate it.

There should be a kill switch normally located under the driverside dash, may be a toggle switch or a pushbutton. Other then that, you can try pulling the fuse for the alarm, but newer alarms are ignition kill and wont let you start with the circuit broken.
