i want to buy a desktop case that says compatible motherboardsare atx and micro atx. can i use another one?

Can i use another mother board or not.

ATX and MicroATX are common standards for motherboard configurations. There is an older standard - AT - that likely you will never see. There is now a newer standard though - BTX - that is starting to become more common. The component layout of these new BTX boards is very different - you'll need a case designed specifically for it because the positioning of the expansion slots is different.

Most major vendors (Dell, HP, IBM, etc...) use a proprietary layout - none of these boards will fit in a standard ATX case.

So I guess my basic answer is No - you don't want to use an ATX case with anything other than an ATX or MicroATX motherboard - it won't fit correctly and you'll cause yourself major headaches.

One last note - All MicroATX motherboards will fit in a standard ATX case, but not the other way around - An ATX motherboard is too big for a case designed only for MicroATX, so pay attention to the type of motherboard you will be using!
