why is it taking so long to format my HDD? its a 1TB but so far after 24 hours its at 1%?

My system is a Precision Workstation and is running vista, has 4 GB of ram, has 2 Pentium processors (Duel core, 3 GHz each). The hard drive configuration is SATA.
